Managing an Acutely Sprained Ankle
|
- Compression - As there is usually swelling associated with ankle sprains, a compression wrap or sleeve can be effective in swelling reduction. Swelling can cause pain and restrict range of motion so it is important to manage it early to help with progressing the athlete back to participation in their sport.
-
Elevation - This is another technique that can be used for the
management of swelling. Swelling is fluid associated with the
inflammatory response and this fluid is subject to the laws of gravity just
like everything else in this world. By elevating the foot, swelling will have a
hard time accumulating in the ankle joint.
- Lastly, the use of (NSAIDs non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), such as Advil, ibuprofen, and Aleve, can be beneficial in reducing the inflammatory response after an injury. These can help with reducing swelling and pain and should be administered as directed on the bottle until pain and swelling are under control.
